That's actually a really difficult question to authoritatively answer. The space required for storing the backups varies with:
- The number of devices (obviously, more devices = more configs)
- The typical size of a backed-up config (can range from a few lines of text to multi-MB binary files), and
- The frequency of changes (since Restorepoint saves each new version).
There is a KB article on our support site that has a few more details about Restorepoint sizing: https://support.sciencelogic.com/s/article/12386. It's not specific to external storage, but is about appliance sizing more generally.
The short version is that in order to meaningfully predict storage requirements, it's necessary to start with an approximation of the types and numbers of devices, as well as an understanding of those device types' config sizes.
In practice, most people end up extrapolating from historical data. I.e., After running Restorepoint for some period of time, you should have a good sense of how much config data it generates, which can then be used to estimate future usage. Our Support team has information about estimated backup sizes for many different device types, so they can help -- but they would still need your information about device counts and expected change frequency.
