2 MIN READ It's important to be aware of end of life (EOL) or end of support (EOS) notices affecting devices in your IT estate and worrying about missing critical vulnerability notices or common vulnerabilities and exposures (CVE) alerts isn’t very fun. The good news is, ScienceLogic SL1 has something that can help. Instead of chasing website postings, emails, or combing forums, leverage SL1 to bring the information to you using ‘RSS Feeds’ subscriptions. SL1 can monitor RSS news feed sites often available through most manufacturers including USCert, DHS CISA, and more. Using a feature called ‘RSS Feeds’ (configured under Events), SL1 will reach out to configured sources, pull available postings into the system, and present them individually as ‘notice’ events in the event console. Configuring the feature is easily done under Events -> RSS Feeds. Simply create a new event feed using a URL, align it to an organization, choose to represent it in the event console, and choose a collector to poll for the feed. It’s that easy! ‘RSS Feeds’ uses and internal collection that runs every 10-minutes using the ‘Data Collection: RSS Event Feed’ admin process (found under System -> Admin Processes) and utilizes the event policy ‘Syndication: News Feed’ as the mechanism to collect and present in the event console. Changes to the admin process can alter frequency and changes to the event policy can affect event duration and criticality, which is defaulted to ‘Notice’ and auto expires after 15-minutes. A common use case is to create a dedicated organization for ease of tracking and visibility then change the event expiration to 30-minutes. I often follow these steps: Add an organization called ‘Industry Alerts’ Subscribe to various original equipment manufacturer (OEM) EOL or EOS feeds Use a Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) feed for security and vulnerability alerts using ‘https://www.cisa.gov/cybersecurity-advisories/all.xml’ as the feed source Most sources of good information are easily found by searching the OEM site or looking for sources in a search engine to find ones relevant to your organization. An example might be ‘Cisco RSS Feed.’ Operational policies using SL1 ‘Events’ to search devices and software versions, etc., can then make quick work of identifying what’s affected in your environment. Then begins a change management process to update or configure your event feed based on the information referenced from your feed source. Isolating all feeds or events to a dedicated organization in SL1 makes it easy to create a dashboard or simply reference the information in a single place. Gone are the days of chasing sites, email, or forums to find critical information that could affect your IT estate. In SL1, creating an automation policy will define the event conditions that must be met before SL1 will trigger an automatic action. Consider a scenario where an unplanned network device configuration change triggers a compliance alert in SL1, but the alert doesn’t provide all the information necessary to determine the best action for resolution. ScienceLogic’s automations can collect additional event information through a python script and return the data to SL1 and/or your incident platform. With this full information set, the best course for remediation can be determined. If appropriate, automations can also assist with resolution steps to avoid human error as you work to reduce your mean time to repair (MTTR). This systematic approach ensures that key events are promptly addressed, reducing the risk of compliance violations and operational disruptions. We are stuck trying to recreate some of the metrics we collect in our current Python2 snippets using pipes. The specific example is 'ping', which required subprocesses, no longer allowed. We don't believe latency_ping,avail_ping from silo_tools will let us collect packet_count, packet_loss, avg_latencies, latencies that a library like ping3 allows. (used to calculate jitter and else) Some of the libraries seem to require raw sockets and/or elevated privileges. So our question is two fold. 1 - Can we import custom libraries such as Ping3? 2 - How do we use elevated privileges on the collectors, as some libraries require elevated priveleges? Hi all, We are in the process of setting up SL1 to monitor a mix of Azure and on-prem VMWare devices. The Azure subscription monitors repeatedly error with: "Azure: Network Failure on App: ARMVMPerformance, Message: HTTPSConnectionPool(host='management.azure.com', port=443): Max retries exceeded with url: Failed to establish a new connection: [Errno -2] Name or service not known',)),". We have 14 subscriptions setup and some don't show the error at all, some show it weekly and 1 shows it every 15 minutes generating 1000's of critical alerts a month. SL1 support/PS say it is down to a DNS issue: We have checked with the ENG Team and it looks like a random DNS issue where it can't resolve "management.azure.com" from the collector and it looks transient. The error message points to a failure to resolve the hostname when the config da’s are run. However we use the same DNS server for all collectors and some subscriptions don't see the error. 2 MIN READ ScienceLogic SL1 is a very powerful system that can make the lives of your operations staff easier, but those outcomes require some maintenance and optimizations. Read on for a few tips about how to get the most out of your SL1 System 1. Use Event Insights You probably know that Event Insights (Expand left menu -> Events -> Event Insights) is a powerful view to see how SL1 is reducing noise in your system, but did you know that it helps you see potential optimizations also? On the right side of the Event Insights page there is a section called “Tuning Targets”. By looking at what devices are creating the most events and which event policies are resulting in the most events, you can see actions that you can take to clean things up. In the example screenshot above, I would want to look at device 203.0.113.249 to see what is going on to trigger so many events. It could be a misconfiguration on the system, a hardware issue that needs to be remedied, or a threshold that could be tweaked. The lower section shows event policies that are being triggered the most. Noise-reduction options here include requiring multiple triggers within a time frame to be sure that the events are persisting, suppressing the events for test or dev devices, or tweaking thresholds to be sure that the event reflects an actionable problem to fix. 2. Use Operational Insights Operational Insights is a powerpack built by ScienceLogic to help manage your SL1 stack. There are separate versions for self-hosted and SaaS customers, but most of the functionality is the same. Once it’s installed and configured, it presents data on a series of dashboards. These dashboards can help you see the status of your collectors, keep track of the trends in the number of devices discovered and business services configured, and even keep an eye on under-the-hood metrics like Configuration Push time and the Event processing backlog. 3. Daily Health Tasks Did you know that the SL1 Documentation has a list of daily health tasks? Some of these items are covered by Event Insights and Operational Insights, but some are not. For example, it’s a great idea to check the System Logs periodically to make sure you know how things are running. If you have concerns about other items in the “Healthy SL1 System” table, you can set event policies and automations to make sure that you are notified in case of any issues. 4. Join the ScienceLogic Nexus Community! Finally, the ScienceLogic Nexus Community is a great resource to keep things working at your best. Interacting with fellow customers, submitting enhancement ideas to the Product Management team, and keeping up with the latest information on new releases helps you plan appropriately and use your time and energy well.
